Summary

CVE-2023-42452 is a vulnerability found in Mastodon, a free and open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. Versions prior to 4.0.10, 4.2.8, and 4.2.0-rc2 are affected. Under certain conditions, attackers can exploit the translation feature to bypass server-side HTML sanitization, allowing unescaped HTML to execute in the browser. Although Mastodon's Content Security Policy provides some protection by blocking inline scripts, there is still a risk of potential XSS attacks if there is a bypass or loophole in the CSP. It's important to note that user interaction is required for this vulnerability to be exploited by clicking on the "Translate" button on a malicious post. The mentioned versions contain a patch for this issue
