Summary

CVE-2023-36812 is a Remote Code Execution vulnerability affecting OpenTSDB, an open source Time Series Database. The vulnerability occurs when user-controlled input is written to the Gnuplot configuration file and then executed by running Gnuplot. The issue has been patched in versions 2.4.2, with further refinements in commits `07c4641471c` and `fa88d3e4b`. To remediate the vulnerability, users are advised to upgrade to the patched versions. Alternatively, if upgrading is not possible, users can disable Gnuplot via the config option `tsd.core.enable_ui = true` and remove the shell files `mygnuplot.bat` and `mygnuplot.sh`. The vulnerability poses a high risk to organizations as it allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code with high integrity and confidentiality impact.
