Summary

CVE-1999-0679 is a buffer overflow vulnerability affecting the hybrid-6 IRC server, a popular choice for EFnet. An attacker can exploit this issue by sending a maliciously crafted m_invite message to a targeted user. If successfully exploited, the buffer overflow could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the affected system. This poses a significant risk to systems running the vulnerable IRC server, particularly in a public network like EFnet, where unsolicited invites are common. It is recommended that users update their IRC server software to a patchable version to mitigate this threat.
