Summary

CVE-2024-5742 is a newly disclosed vulnerability affecting GNU Nano, a popular text editor. This issue permits privilege escalation through an insecure temporary file. When Nano is terminated while editing, it saves the file to an emergency backup with the user's current permissions. An attacker can manipulate this emergency file by creating a malicious symlink during the brief window of opportunity, potentially escalating their privileges and compromising the system.
