Summary
CVE-2024-29187 is a vulnerability in the WiX toolset, which is used to create installers for Windows Installer. When a bundle runs as the SYSTEM user, it utilizes an insecure directory, C:\Windows\Temp, to drop and load multiple binaries. This allows standard users to hijack the binary before it is loaded, resulting in elevation of privileges. The vulnerability has been fixed in versions 3.14.1 and 4.0.5. The exploitability score is 1.3 out of 10, indicating a low level of difficulty for attackers to exploit the vulnerability. The base severity score is 7.3 out of 10, categorizing it as a high-risk vulnerability with potential impact on confidentiality and integrity of the affected system. Additionally, user interaction is required for exploitation, and the attack vector is local. Organizations using WiX toolset should update to the patched versions to mitigate this vulnerability and prevent unauthorized privilege escalation attacks.
