Summary

CVE-2024-28860 is a vulnerability in the networking, observability, and security solution called Cilium. This vulnerability affects users of IPsec transparent encryption in Cilium and can render the encryption ineffective. It exposes users to cryptographic attacks such as chosen plaintext, key recovery, and replay attacks by a man-in-the-middle attacker. The vulnerability occurs due to an ESP sequence number collision when multiple nodes are configured with the same key. The issue has been resolved in fixed versions of Cilium (1.13.13, 1.14.9, and 1.15.3) by implementing unique keys for each IPsec tunnel established between nodes. The severity of this vulnerability is rated as HIGH with a CVSS score of 8.0, indicating significant risks to confidentiality and integrity.
