Summary
CVE-2024-27305 is a newly discovered vulnerability affecting the aiosmtpd email server, an asyncio-based implementation of the Python stdlib smtpd.py. This vulnerability allows for SMTP smuggling, a novel form of attack where an attacker can send spoofed emails with fake sender addresses, enabling advanced phishing attacks. The issue stems from differing interpretations of the SMTP protocol, and similar vulnerabilities have been identified in other SMTP software like Postfix. With the right SMTP server configuration, an attacker can send spoofed emails to inbound aiosmtpd instances. Version 1.4.5 addresses this issue, and it is recommended that users upgrade to mitigate the risk. Currently, there are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
