Details
Summary
CVE-2024-25129 is a vulnerability affecting the CodeQL CLI repo before version 2.16.3. The XML parser used by the CodeQL CLI to read auxiliary files is susceptible to XML External Entity attacks. If a vulnerable CLI version encounters a maliciously modified CodeQL database or QL query sources, it may make outgoing HTTP requests to attacker-chosen URLs, leading to potential loss of privacy or exfiltration of secrets. Users receiving databases or queries from untrusted sources are at risk, especially those handling zip archives or tarballs containing QL sources. The vulnerability is fixed in CodeQL CLI release 2.16.3. Workarounds include not accepting untrusted CodeQL material, processing it on a machine without an internet connection, or upgrading to a trusted version. Older CodeQL releases used in automated CI systems for security scanning are considered safe, but users should ensure they are using a trusted production release for `codeql pack create` command.
