Summary

CVE-2024-24579 is a vulnerability in the stereoscope library, specifically affecting version 0.0.1. This vulnerability allows an attacker to create a malicious OCI tar archive that can cause files to be written outside of the intended directory during unarchiving. The vulnerable functions include file.UntarToDirectory(), oci.TarballImageProvider struct, and image.Image.Read(). A workaround for this vulnerability is to switch to using an OCI layout by unarchiving the tar archive and providing the unarchived directory as input. The potential danger of this vulnerability lies in the possibility of an attacker being able to write files in unintended locations, which could lead to unauthorized access or manipulation of sensitive data within an organization.
