Details
Summary
CVE-2024-21599 is a vulnerability affecting the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) in Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series. An unauthenticated adjacent attacker can exploit this Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime issue, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS). This vulnerability is triggered when an MX Series device receives Precision Time Protocol (PTP) packets on an unsupported MPC3E, causing a memory leak and resulting in unpredictable behavior and potential MPC crashes and restarts. To identify affected devices, network administrators should monitor for increased "LAN buffer" utilization using the 'show heap' command and a non-zero "Pending PFEs" counter in 'show clksync ptp nbr-upd-info'. This vulnerability impacts Junos OS on MX Series with MPC3E for all versions earlier than 20.4R3-S3, 21.1 versions earlier than 21.1R3-S4, 21.2 versions earlier than 21.2R3, 21.3 versions earlier than 21.3R2-S1 and 21.3R3, 21.4 versions earlier than 21.4R2, and 22.1 versions earlier than 22.1R2.
