Summary

CVE-2024-21587 is an Improper Handling of Exceptional Conditions vulnerability found in the broadband edge subscriber management daemon (bbe-smgd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series. This vulnerability can be exploited by an attacker who is directly connected to the vulnerable system and repeatedly flaps DHCP subscriber sessions. By doing so, the attacker can cause a slow memory leak, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The memory leak can only be resolved by manually restarting bbe-smgd. This vulnerability only affects systems with BFD liveness detection for DHCP subscribers enabled. Organizations using the affected products should monitor for signs of increased memory allocation in bbe-smgd by periodically executing the 'show system processes extensive' command. The potential danger posed by this vulnerability is a DoS attack, which could disrupt network operations and affect the availability of network services.
