Summary
CVE-2024-1488 is a newly discovered vulnerability affecting Unbound, a popular DNS software. The issue stems from incorrect default permissions, which enable any process outside the unbound group to modify the unbound.service configuration. This vulnerability poses a significant risk, as an attacker who can connect to the localhost on port 8953 can manipulate the running instance. Potential consequences of exploiting this flaw include altering forwarders to track all queries forwarded by the local resolver and, in some cases, disrupting resolving altogether. This vulnerability underscores the importance of implementing tight access control and timely software updates.
