Summary

CVE-2023-5618 is a vulnerability affecting the Modern Footnotes plugin for WordPress, specifically versions up to and including 1.4.16. The vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level permissions or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages using the plugin's shortcode, leading to stored cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks. The issue arises from inadequate input sanitization and output escaping of user-supplied attributes. This vulnerability poses a potential danger to organizations using the affected plugin, as it can enable attackers to execute malicious scripts whenever a user accesses an injected page. To remediate this vulnerability, users should update the Modern Footnotes plugin to a version that includes proper input sanitization and output escaping measures.
