Summary

CVE-2023-49279 is a vulnerability in the Umbraco ASP.NET content management system (CMS). It affects versions 7.0.0 to 7.15.11, 8.18.9, 10.7.0, 11.5.0, and 12.2.0 of Umbraco. The vulnerability allows a user with access to the backoffice to upload SVG files that include scripts, which can be executed if another user is tricked into loading the media directly in a browser. Versions 7.15.11, 8.18.9, 10.7.0, 11.5.0, and 12.2.0 have patches available to fix this issue, and there are also workarounds such as implementing server-side file validation or serving all media from a different host than where Umbraco is hosted. The potential danger this vulnerability poses to an organization is that it allows for cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, which can lead to unauthorized access or manipulation of sensitive information on the affected systems.
