Summary

CVE-2023-48312 is a privilege escalation vulnerability affecting the capsule-proxy, a reverse proxy for the capsule operator project. The vulnerability arises from a missing check for user authentication based on the `TokenReview` result. Clusters running with the `anonymous-auth` Kubernetes API Server setting disabled are at risk, as it allows bypassing the token review mechanism and interacting with the upper Kubernetes API Server. However, this privilege escalation cannot be exploited if only client certificates (SSL/TLS) are relied upon. The vulnerability has been addressed in version 0.4.6 of capsule-proxy, and users are advised to upgrade to mitigate potential risks. The base severity of this vulnerability is rated as CRITICAL with a base score of 9.8 according to CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H metrics, indicating high impact on confidentiality and integrity, along with low attack complexity and high availability impact.
