Summary
CVE-2023-46728 is a vulnerability that affects the Squid caching proxy for the Web, specifically versions prior to Squid 6.0.1. This vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference bug, making Squid susceptible to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack against its Gopher gateway. Any gopher server can trigger this bug, even if it doesn't have malicious intent. To remediate this vulnerability, users are advised to upgrade to Squid version 6.0.1 or higher. If upgrading is not possible, organizations should reject all gopher URL requests.
