Summary

CVE-2023-40180 is a vulnerability that affects the silverstripe-graphql package, which serves Silverstripe data in GraphQL representations. This vulnerability allows an attacker to execute a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack against a website by using a recursive graphql query. Websites with publicly exposed graphql schemas are mostly affected, although the risk can be mitigated for sites hosted behind a content delivery network (CDN). The vulnerability has been addressed in versions 3.8.2, 4.1.3, 4.2.5, 4.3.4, and 5.0.3 of the package, and users are advised to upgrade to these versions to remediate the issue. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability, and it has a high severity rating with a base score of 7.5 according to NIST's National Vulnerability Database (NVD).
