Summary

CVE-2023-38745 is a vulnerability in Pandoc before version 3.1.6, which allows arbitrary file write. This can be exploited by providing a crafted image element in the input when generating files using the --extract-media option or outputting to PDF format. The vulnerability affects systems that pass untrusted user input to Pandoc and allow it to produce a PDF or use the --extract-media option. An attacker can create or overwrite arbitrary files, depending on the privileges of the process running Pandoc. The danger lies in the potential for unauthorized access and manipulation of sensitive files, posing a risk to the affected organization's integrity and availability of data.
