Summary

CVE-2023-38698 is a vulnerability affecting Ethereum Name Service (ENS), a decentralized naming system on the Ethereum blockchain. Controllers can register and renew domains, but a preliminary analysis indicates that an integer overflow in the renew function may enable an attacker-controlled controller to reduce the expiration time of existing domains. This could potentially allow attackers to claim affected domains for themselves, a concern heightened by the possibility of renewal discounts. Version 0.0.22 of `@ensdomains/ens-contracts` contains a patch for this issue, but until then, no action is required as long as domain registration costs do not become unreasonably low or unlimited.
