Summary

CVE-2023-36807 is a vulnerability affecting the pypdf library version 2.10.5. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by creating a malformed PDF file that triggers an infinite loop, causing the current process to hang and utilizing 100% of a single CPU core. This issue does not impact memory usage. Versions prior to 2.10.5 throw an error but do not hang forever. The vulnerability has been fixed in release 2.10.6, and users are advised to upgrade to this version. If upgrading is not possible, users can modify the `PyPDF2/generic/_data_structures.py::read_object` file to throw an error instead of hanging indefinitely. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5 (medium severity) and poses a potential danger to organizations as it can impact the availability of systems running the vulnerable pypdf library version 2.10.5 by consuming excessive CPU resources.
