Summary
CVE-2023-36470 is a remote code execution vulnerability affecting the XWiki Platform. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by creating or editing a document with an icon set containing XWiki syntax and Velocity code. This code is executed with programming rights, allowing the attacker to inject and execute arbitrary commands. There are multiple attack vectors, including the use of the [icon picker](https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Icon%20Theme%20Application#HIconPicker) and the use of XWiki syntax in certain documents. This vulnerability impacts the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the entire XWiki instance. XWiki 14.10.6 and 15.1 have been patched to prevent this vulnerability by requiring script rights and executing the code within the context of the icon theme. Users are advised to upgrade as soon as possible, and there are currently no known workarounds.
