Summary

CVE-2023-36462 is a vulnerability that affects Mastodon, a free and open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. The vulnerability exists in versions 2.6.0 and prior to versions 3.5.9, 4.0.5, and 4.1.3 of Mastodon. An attacker can create a verified profile link with specific formatting to hide parts of the link, making it appear to lead to a different URL than it actually does. Although visually misleading, clicking on the link will reveal its true destination. This vulnerability could be exploited for phishing purposes similar to IDN homograph attacks, posing a potential danger to organizations. The issue has been patched in versions 3.5.9, 4.0.5, and 4.1.3 of Mastodon.
