Summary

CVE-2023-36460, also known as TootRoot, is a critical vulnerability affecting Mastodon, a free and open-source social network server based on ActivityPub. Versions 3.5.0 and prior to 3.5.9, 4.0.5, and 4.1.3 are susceptible to this vulnerability. Attackers can exploit this flaw by using specially crafted media files to manipulate Mastodon's media processing code, allowing them to create arbitrary files in any location accessible to Mastodon. This can lead to Denial of Service attacks and arbitrary Remote Code Execution. To remediate the issue, it is recommended to update to versions 3.5.9, 4.0.5, or 4.1.3 that contain a patch for this vulnerability. The potential danger posed by this vulnerability is high as it could allow attackers to compromise the integrity and confidentiality of an organization's systems and data.
