Details
Summary
CVE-2023-36456 is a vulnerability affecting the open-source Identity Provider, authentik. Prior to versions 2023.4.3 and 2023.5.5, authentik failed to verify the authenticity of X-Forwarded-For and X-Real-IP headers, increasing the risk of IP address spoofing. Exposure is limited to authentik setups directly accessible by users without reverse proxies. The impact of this vulnerability includes potential IP bypassing in custom flows, unreliable IP addresses in logs and user sessions, and the ability for attackers to override IP addresses in applications proxied by authentik's built-in outpost. This could lead to security risks, such as bypassing two-factor authentication or inaccurate logging. The vulnerability has been mitigated in versions 2023.4.3 and 2023.5.5, which include a patch to verify the source of these headers. Users are strongly encouraged to update their authentik installations to these versions to minimize the risk of IP address spoofing and related security issues.
