Summary

CVE-2022-45147 is a critical vulnerability affecting various versions of SIMATIC PCS neo V4.0, SIMATIC STEP 7 V16, V17, and V18. These applications fail to adequately restrict the .NET BinaryFormatter during deserialization of user-provided input. An attacker exploiting this vulnerability could cause a type confusion, ultimately enabling arbitrary code execution within the affected application. This issue is synonymous with .NET BinaryFormatter's CA2300 code quality issue documented by Microsoft.
