Summary
CVE-2021-45046 is a critical vulnerability that affects Apache Log4j, specifically version 2.15.0. The fix for this vulnerability was found to be incomplete in certain non-default configurations. Attackers with control over Thread Context Map (MDC) input data can exploit this vulnerability by crafting malicious input data using a JNDI Lookup pattern, resulting in an information leak and remote code execution in some environments and local code execution in all environments. The issue is addressed in Log4j 2.16.0 (Java 8) and 2.12.2 (Java 7) by removing support for message lookup patterns and disabling JNDI functionality by default. This vulnerability poses a high risk to organizations as it allows attackers to gain unauthorized access and execute arbitrary code remotely or locally, potentially leading to data breaches, system compromise, and further exploitation of the affected systems. It is crucial for organizations using Apache Log4j version 2.15.0 to update to the patched versions immediately to mitigate the risk associated with this vulnerability.
