Recorded Future’s fourth annual Recorded Future User Network (RFUN) Conference took place in Washington, D.C. on October 7, 2015.

With over 15 expert presenters speaking on everything from counter threat operations to IoT to contextualizing phishing attacks, actionable and timely threat intelligence was the focus of the day. As speaker Chris Poulin advised, “Be bold and back it up with data.”

At Recorded Future, we’re all about the data – finding it on the Web, collecting it, contextualizing it, and delivering it as real-time threat intelligence to our customers.

And apparently we’re not alone in our quest for actionable threat intel; attendees of 2015’s RFUN said they’re constantly looking for new ways to better inform their security operations with data and intelligence that helps them protect their organizations.

As keynote, Dan Geer, CISO at In-Q-Tel explained, intelligence “is a daunting topic.”

“Intelligence” isn’t people. It isn’t processes. It isn’t technology. It is, however, a combination of all those things. Pulling it all together is the difficult part.

Sometimes when facing a difficult task, it’s best to start with the goal – what are we trying to do? Geer put it best in his talk, “… intelligence is that which enables decision making and, in turn, which improves outcomes.” The goal of threat intelligence, therefore, is to enable better decision making. As an industry, we need more and improved ways to quickly find out about emerging threats and the adversaires behind those threats.
