Monitoring the Impact of Syrian Jihadi Groups
Earlier this week, Aron Lund at Foreign Policy compiled a “field guide” to the various Jihadi factions currently operating in Syria. We wanted to add a complementary resource on this blog that provides the recent activity of those groups detailed in FP allowing intelligence analysts to monitor the latest.
The following interactive views from Recorded Future reflect the reported action of five major groups or factions: Jabhat al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham, Fatah Al-Islam, the Tawhid Division, and the Syrian Liberation Front.
Recent Events of Note
- On October 2, Abdel Qader Saleh head of the rebel Liwa al-Tawhid brigade affiliated with the Tawhid Division clashed with the Syrian army claiming it had turned a historic Homs mosque “into a military base.”
- Last week, guards in Roumieh discovered that Syrian Omar Othman, Palestinian Mohammad Falah and Algerian Faisal Aiqala, all members of Fatah al-Islam, escaped from Roumieh prison.
- Oct 11 and 12 near the village of al-Taaneh, a few hundred fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra, Fajr al-Islam and a few members of the FSA attacked and destroyed an air base.
The above resources will remain active and update to reflect the last thirty days of events for each group, so please follow along and let us know if you notice any emerging trends or notable events.
