CVE-2024-6158

Summary

CVE-2024-6158 is a vulnerability affecting the Category Posts Widget and term-and-category-based-posts-widget plugins in WordPress before versions 4.9.17 and 4.9.13, respectively. High privilege users, including admins, can exploit this issue by injecting malicious scripts into widget settings that are not validated or escaped properly. These scripts are then stored and executed when the widget is displayed on a page or post, enabling Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. In multisite setups, the unfiltered_html capability is often disallowed, yet this vulnerability can still be exploited without it.
