Summary
CVE-2024-57940 is a vulnerability affecting the Linux kernel's exfat file system. If a corrupted file system creates a cluster with a linked cluster to itself and an unused directory entry in the same cluster, an infinite loop can occur in the 'exfat_readdir()' function. This loop prevents the release of s_lock, leading to other tasks such as 'exfat_sync_fs()' hanging indefinitely. The recently committed fix stops the traversal of the cluster chain when encountering an unused directory entry to prevent this infinite loop.
