Summary
CVE-2024-40591 is a privilege escalation vulnerability affecting Fortinet FortiOS versions 7.6.0, 7.4.0 through 7.4.4, 7.2.0 through 7.2.9, and before 7.0.15 (CWE-266). An authenticated admin with the Security Fabric permission can exploit this issue by connecting a targeted FortiGate to a malicious upstream FortiGate they control, thereby escalating their privileges to super-admin. This flaw poses a significant risk to organizations using these FortiOS versions, as it allows unauthorized access to critical network functions.
