Details
Summary
CVE-2023-40583 is a memory exhaustion vulnerability affecting the libp2p networking library, specifically in go-libp2p. Malicious actors can exploit signed peer records to store arbitrary data in a remote node's memory, leading to memory consumption that does not get garbage collected. If not monitored, this could result in a node running out of memory and crashing. The impact of this vulnerability depends on the node's resources, with larger servers taking longer to bring down. Go-libp2p users in production environments are advised to upgrade to version 0.27.4 to mitigate this issue.
