Summary

CVE-2023-40303 is a privilege escalation vulnerability affecting GNU inetutils before version 2.5. The issue lies in the unchecked return values of set*id() family functions used in the ftpd, rcp, rlogin, rsh, rshd, and uucpd services. A process attempting to drop privileges may continue with elevated privileges if a setuid system call fails, allowing attackers to gain unauthorized access and control over affected systems.
