Summary
CVE-2017-17969 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability affecting the NCompress::NShrink::CDecoder::CodeReal method in versions 18.00 and older of 7-Zip and p7zip. An attacker can exploit this flaw by crafting a malicious ZIP archive, leading to an out-of-bounds write and potential denial of service. Seemingly benign files within the archive may contain hidden code that, upon decoding, could execute arbitrary commands on the targeted system. This vulnerability poses a significant risk to systems processing untrusted ZIP files and demands immediate patching.
