CVSS 3.1 Score 7.8 of 10 (high)
Details
Summary
CVE-2010-0232 is a vulnerability affecting Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 to Windows 7, including Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, and Windows Server 2008 Gold and SP2. This issue arises due to the kernel's failure to adequately validate BIOS calls when access to 16-bit applications is enabled on a 32-bit x86 platform. Malicious actors can take advantage of this vulnerability by constructing a malicious VDM_TIB data structure within the Thread Environment Block (TEB) and then exploiting it by calling the NtVdmControl function. This leads to improperly handled exceptions that trigger the #GP trap handler (nt!KiTrap0D), also known as the "Windows Kernel Exception Handler Vulnerability." Consequently, local users can gain elevated privileges, potentially enabling them to install malware or modify system configurations.
