Summary

CVE-2000-0216 is a vulnerability affecting Microsoft email clients in Outlook, Exchange, and Windows Messaging. This issue permits attackers to create forged Read Receipt and Delivery Receipt requests that can cause a mail system to be flooded with responses. When an attacker sends a specially crafted email with a redirection to a large distribution list, the email clients will automatically generate and send back receipts to the list, overwhelming the system with responses. This can lead to denial-of-service conditions, potential mail server crashes, and increased network traffic. To mitigate this risk, it is recommended to disable automatic processing of Read Receipts and Delivery Receipts, or configure email clients to only send receipts to the sender.
