Summary

CVE-1999-0962 is a critical buffer overflow vulnerability affecting the passwd command in HP-UX systems. This issue allows local users to manipulate a command line option, causing excess data to write beyond the buffer's boundaries. As a result, an attacker can execute arbitrary code, effectively gaining root privileges and compromising the system. This vulnerability poses a significant risk, as it enables unauthorized users to gain highest-level access and potentially wreak havoc on the affected system.
