Summary

CVE-1999-0848 is a denial-of-service vulnerability affecting the BIND named software. The issue arises when the software consumes more than the specified maximum limit of file descriptors (fdmax). By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can cause BIND named to exceed the fdmax limit, leading to a denial-of-service condition. This can result in the BIND named process becoming unresponsive, making it unable to process queries and potentially causing outages for DNS services. To protect against this vulnerability, administrators should limit the number of file descriptors that BIND named can use and keep their software up-to-date with the latest patches.
