Tensions High Ahead of Anti-Morsi Protests in Egypt

The actions of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi have been closely scrutinized since he took power on June 30 as political analysts attempt to decipher his intentions and political direction. And yet, the attention on Morsi seems to only be heightening as he contends with the civil war in nearby Syria, threatening rhetoric between neighboring Israel and Iran, and his own domestic security issue of unrest in Sinai.

Now, a protest planned for Friday, August 24 in what looks to be the first sizable public display of opposition to Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, which we’ve profiled on this blog, looks increasingly troublesome. Egypt’s interior ministry has reportedly warned protesters that “it would respond ‘decisively’ to any violence” while “Sheikh Hashem Islam, a member of the Fatwas Committee of Egypt’s highest Islamic authority, Al-Azhar, has preached that confronting [protesters on] 24 August… may not be punishable.”
