Exploring the Future of Security Intelligence at RFUN: Predict 2019

December 5, 2019 • The Recorded Future Team

On October 29 to 31, 2019, more than 600 Recorded Future partners, clients, and security professionals from across the industry joined us in Washington, D.C. for the eighth annual Recorded Future User Network (RFUN): Predict 2019 conference.

Themed “Exploring the Future of Security Intelligence,” the event shattered attendance records and challenged attendees to explore and embrace a broader security philosophy that addresses holistic organizational risk in the digital age. This security intelligence approach demonstrates that leading with intelligence across threat prevention, third-party risk management, and brand protection strategies is the most effective way for every security function to save time, money, and effort — and ultimately, accelerate risk reduction.

Here are some highlights from Predict 2019’s three incredible, energizing days of education, networking, and fun.

Captivating Keynotes

This year, we were thrilled to welcome a lineup of world-renowned speakers to the Predict 2019 stage — from Samy Kamkar, the security researcher best known for creating the Myspace worm, to Brian Krebs, an award-winning investigative journalist who regularly breaks stories on high-profile data breaches.

The role of actionable intelligence was a common theme throughout these talks. During one notable presentation, Recorded Future co-founder and CTO Staffan Truvé and software engineer Josefin Ondrus demonstrated how predictive threat intelligence can help organizations proactively pinpoint from where and how the next cyberattack will come.

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Paul Becker (U.S. Navy, retired) and Lieutenant Commander Craig Gruber (U.S. Navy) examined the crucial need to place actionable intelligence — particularly open source intelligence (OSINT) — into the hands of decision makers at every level, as rapidly as possible. They explained how transitioning operational intelligence into actionable policy and avoiding “paralysis by analysis” requires bridging the gap between analysts in security operations centers and leadership of all kinds.

Other talks examined today’s most alarming cybercrime trends, from the rise in ransomware to global influence operations targeting the 2020 election, and offered perspectives on how governments, businesses, consumers, and security professionals can up their game in response.

Additionally, speakers outlined best practices for building a diverse, winning team and creating a culture of intelligence-led security.

Top-Notch Training

RFUN: Predict 2019 featured more than 35 hours of education and hands-on training sessions led by Recorded Future experts. From the security professional just starting to explore the role of threat intelligence, to the veteran Recorded Future user looking to expand usage from security operations and vulnerability management to brand monitoring and third-party risk reduction, Predict 2019 had something for everyone this year.

Attendees explored our latest features and learned how to maximize their usage of Recorded Future. Training session topics included up-leveling security programs by connecting our threat intelligence to security appliances; leveraging prebuilt threat hunting to quickly and effectively identify threats and mitigate risks; best practices for identifying, tracking, and profiling threat actors on the dark web; utilizing Recorded Future to support geopolitical use cases by understanding investigative techniques and tactics; and much more.

Powerful Partnerships

Predict 2019 attendees also experienced the power of our deep technology ecosystem. Today, Recorded Future integrates with more than 40 (and counting) of the best security solutions on the market. Our partners specialize in TIPs, SIEM, SOAR, incident response platforms, deep analysis, cybersecurity training and learning resources, industrial control systems, and more. Attendees got to meet many of our partners at this year’s event.

We’d like to thank our 2019 platinum sponsors Carahsoft, Demisto, ThreatConnect, and Verizon, and our gold sponsors, AWS, Bandura Cyber, Exabeam, Farsight Security, King & Union, Palo Alto Networks, ServiceNow, and Splunk. We couldn’t have done it without you!

RFUN, Fun!

In between our lineup of incredible speakers, content, and in-depth training sessions, we also had some serious fun. From our welcome BOO Bash (it was Halloween, after all) complete with monsters, fortune tellers, Halloween games, and costumes, to our event-wide scavenger hunt and trivia tests, attendees got into the spirit and enjoyed networking with like-minded security professionals from around the country.

For many, the highlight of Predict 2019 was the evening reception held in the brand new International Spy Museum, which lifts the veil of secrecy on the hidden world of intelligence and espionage and explores its successes, failures, challenges, and controversies. With top-secret access to never-before-seen exhibits, attendees practiced the art of disguise, cracked codes, uncovered hidden secrets, and sipped specialty cocktails (à la James Bond) at the rooftop martini bar.

That’s a Wrap!

At Recorded Future, we believe that intelligence is the key to unlocking the potential of security programs. We are proud of the amazing, fast-growing community of clients, partners, and sponsors who join us in embracing the security intelligence philosophy to protect their organizations and communities from present and future threats. RFUN: Predict 2019 was truly unforgettable, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
