Working in Boston at the World’s Largest Threat Intelligence Company

Although Recorded Future was founded by Swedish scientists and innovators, our HQ has always been a key part of the Somerville and Boston tech startup scene. Recognized for our award-winning platform and amazing culture, the team and our HQ have changed quite a bit over the years.

Initially established in Somerville, MA, north of Boston, the Futurists' headquarters was once a laundromat. Twelve years after we set up camp there, it is time for the next chapter. Our HQ has moved to downtown Boston in Post Office Square — and we’re ready to make new memories there.

Key functions operate out of our Boston-based office, including customer success, security, data engineering, product, and marketing. Nearly 200 Futurists call the Boston office their home base, and many others travel for team meetings and strategic onsites.

“In 2019, when I started, we were about 300 people globally — now we’re almost 200 just in the Boston office!”

Global Office Operations & Facilities Director

“We’ve grown to more than 1,000 employees, and let’s just say the days of one-person teams are behind us!”

The space

With a new space comes new opportunities. The open floor space is conducive to increased collaboration, open conversation, and learning from one another. Camaraderie was always part of what made the Boston office culture so special. But now, we get to enjoy other perks of being downtown, such as more people in the office, more food options, and more opportunities for team activities. With the new office’s close proximity to the airport and the train station, it is even easier for Futurists from around the world to visit — bringing our global teams together for enhanced collaboration and connection.

“The Boston office is made up of almost entirely of windows, which helps a lot more than you’d think coming from the underground vibe of the laundromat.”

If you recall from our London office blog, we like theme-named meeting rooms. In Boston, our conference rooms used to be named after countries; now they’re named after planets and stars.

“Mercury has become my favorite,” said longtime Futurist Lisa Cefalo. “Sun may have the spotlight, but Mercury has the best skyline.”

The culture

As we’ve grown, the office has brought together more teams, more perspectives, and more responsibilities. Futurists describe our culture in many ways, such as open, friendly, energized by positive change, and characterized by camaraderie. But, with every conversation, the same theme comes back and resonates with Boston Futurists: the sense of community. Beyond our global monthly newsletters and our fun Slack channels, we insist on making time and space to come together for in-office gatherings and celebrations.

“Even with all the change, people still show up for one another,” said Lisa Cefalo. “The office may have grown, but that sense of community has stayed with us.”

We asked longtime Boston Futurists about their favorite memories, and this is what we heard:

“When a longtime team member retired — a rare event around here, so we were a little rusty at saying goodbye — everyone recorded a short video sharing what they would miss about them,” said Lisa Cefalo. “It brought her to tears, and probably a few of us, too. It was a reminder that you’re building more than a career here; along the way, you’re building a work family.”

“One of my favorite events was sailing on the Charles and hanging out with colleagues in the summer sun,” said Lacey Maddalena.

Why Recorded Future?

At Recorded Future, Futurists are given ownership of their careers and growth, backed by the resources needed to succeed and make an impact. Lacey Maddalena, a Futurist for over seven years, experienced this firsthand.

“I've been given a lot of opportunities to try new things. I started at the company as a recruiter, moved into employer branding, and now oversee our global facilities and real estate team,” she shared. “There aren't many companies that give employees the chance to try new roles and develop their careers in so many new ways.”

Maura Naughton, Strategy & Business Operations Director, credits this culture of opportunities to the company’s leadership.

“I've had six different roles over the 10 years I’ve worked here,” she said. “It's been an incredible place to learn, grow, and try.”

Beyond individual professional growth, what unites team members is a clear mission: to secure our world with intelligence. Today, Futurists help secure over 1,900 clients across more than 80 countries.

“What I’ve enjoyed most is sharing the big moments with the people who made them possible,” Lisa added, reflecting on the collective impact. “We’ve navigated change and built something bigger together. Seeing how far we’ve come has been incredibly rewarding.”

“Through all the office moves and changes, we’ve managed to hold onto a piece of where it all began — our old laundromat signs,” said Lisa. “A small reminder of our roots and the journey that brought us all here.”
