Big Technology Players Getting Into Solar Energy
By Chris on June 3, 2011
The idea that solar energy will solve the world’s eventual need for renewable power has been kicked around for quite some time now. Lately though, interest seems to have ratcheted up from a corporate standpoint, and solar is gaining serious attention from deep pockets with a history of bringing new technology to the mainstream.
The above treemap is the result of a query in Recorded Future for business relationships and corporate investments set to take place or mature in the future related to a collection of top solar energy companies. As you can see, I’ve highlighted agreements between Intel and MiaSole as well as Toshiba and SunPower Corporation.
In addition to these future facing events, we can analyze the web for other activity in the solar market over the last twelve months. What we find are significant investments or partnerships from major technology and manufacturing companies including heavy hitters like Google, Samsung, and Ford.
What do you think? Do these developments back up recent, claims like this one from US Vice President Joe Biden, claiming that solar power costs could be cut in half by 2015?
